The Soft Brainwashing: 53% of Americans believe one in five are gay

Is there any point in public debate in a society where hardly anyone has been taught how to think, while millions have been taught what to think?” – Peter Hitchens

Indoctrination isn’t always sit-in-a-chair-with-eyes-clamped-open-while-you-are-forced-to-watch-propaganda obvious, it’s often much more subtle. Social manipulation is the preeminent means of moving a culture in the direction in which one wants it to go. And so it goes with the gay marriage movement.

There’s a caveat to this. This isn’t a pro or con piece about gay marriage. Personally, I’m con, but I want to talk about something different. I want to talk about why our society has so quickly, and with little pause, become a majority pro-gay marriage nation.

Don’t you find it odd that the transition from anti-gay marriage to pro-gay marriage has come so swiftly? Just seven years ago, every candidate for president ran on the platform of traditional marriage–even Hillary and Obama. In the span of seven years, 36 states have adopted gay marriage–thirty of which have done so in the last three years–every Democrat supports it, and many Republicans do as well. But why?

For 26 states, it was through judicial fiat, but public opinion has evolved as well. According to Gallup, currently 60% of Americans want gay marriage recognized, while 37% oppose it. In 2008, it was 40% pro to 56% con. In 1996, it was 27% pro to 68% con.

The trend is sharp, and it’s because we have no idea what we’re talking about. A recent Gallup survey asked “Just your best guess, what percent of Americans today would you say are gay or lesbian?” 33% of respondents guessed “more than 25%,” and 20% guessed “20% to 25%.” Total, 53% of respondents believed the gay population was at the very least one in five. The median guess was 23%.

The actual population of is much smaller. The CDC reports:

“Based on the 2013 NHIS data [collected in 2013 from 34,557 adults aged 18 and over], 96.6% of adults identified as straight, 1.6% identified as gay or lesbian, and 0.7% identified as bisexual…”

1.6%. Even being generous and tripling the number, it’s only 4.8%—that’s extremely small. So where do 53% of Americans get the idea that there are 12.6 to 15.6 times the number of gay people than there actually are? That’s a massive gap.

Gallup suggests that the gross overestimation may partially due to “prominent media portrayals of gay characters on television and in movies, even as far back as 2002, and perhaps the high visibility of activists who have pushed gay causes.”

I agree. It’s soft brainwashing. We’ve been told for years that gay people are everywhere, that it’s a completely average thing, so we’ve come to believe that it is. That’s why so many people think that more than 1/5 Americans are gay when it’s more like 1/50.

You know what happens when people believe that something is pervasive and participated in by a large number of people? They become more neutral to it, or better yet, they become actively accepting of it. It’s the age-old mentality of “everyone believes it, so I guess I will, too.”

People are very easily led; just tug the rope and we’ll follow without much thought.

This is why the support for gay marriage has skyrocketed in our society. In just seven years, it’s jumped by 20 percent. That’s an incredible leap. When every celebrity spouts the talking points, when every TV show and movie has a gay character, when the media covers gay marriage and the gay rights movement as if it were this massive thing, it becomes a massive thing.

We’ve been softly brainwashed by the media to believe something that isn’t true, and in turn, we have come to support something that we don’t truly understand. That’s dangerous. Pro-gay marriage, anti-gay marriage—few people actually get it; they’re just following the stream of popular culture, or they’re just blindly following other people.

Who has really studied the issue? Who has taken the time to sit for just one minute and think “Why do I support this?” or “Why am I against this?” My guess is very few people.

This is the most obvious and frightening version of soft brainwashing I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s had a massive cultural impact and it’s continuing to speed forward. I’d like the 53% of people who believe the gay population is more than one in five to see actual statistics. I’d like for people to know what is real and what is cultural manipulation. Because as it stands right now, we’re on the stupefyingly uneducated side, which in my experience is the wrong side, regardless of the issue.

Are you pro-gay marriage or anti-gay marriage? Do you know why? Do you really know why, or are you just repeating what you’ve heard?

Ask yourself that. If you come out the other side unable to answer why you are pro or con with more than “Well, love is love,” or “Because gays are icky,” you should probably do some serious intellectual reassessment.

Have you been taught how to think, or what to think?
